an oxymoron?

Singer Boy George has been sent to jail for falsely imprisoning a male prostitute in his east London flat.

The judge at Snaresbrook Crown Court said the star, real name George O'Dowd, has used "gratuitous violence."

now, if i'm not mistaken the antonym for gratuitous is necessary. at least, that's according to Thesaurus.com. the synonym would then be unnecessary

think about some of the violence we hear about. the killings of children in Gaza this last three weeks; the bombing of the police training facility in Kabul today; the shooting of five students at Dunbar High School in Chicago after a basketball game last week.... i think you get the picture.

by synonym and antonym, violence then would either be necessary or unnecessary.

can someone please tell me something that is necessary violence, please?

oh, and if you look at another of the classic definitions of gratuitous you discover that it also means free...

but isn't there a fee for violence? someone, usually the victim, pays for it?

i mean, i'm just asking...

as far as Boy George, i've always thought him a bit
gratuitous.

If I listen to your lies would you say
I'm a man without conviction
I'm a man who doesn't know
How to sell a contradiction
You come and go
You come and go

Karma karma karma karma karma chameleon

well, the conviction part is no longer true. he's been sentenced to 18 months in prison. that's karma, i suppose...
