silly laws...

There are a lots of silly laws on the books all over the country. I'm sure that you can name a few in your own town.

Two years ago, Chicago banned the sale of foie gras, a delicacy of duck and goose livers elevated to near cult status by the French, on restaurant menus. Consequently, there have been duckeasy's in the city either selling it on the qt or giving it away since the law only bans selling it. Even Mayor Daley thinks it is one of the stupidest laws passed in recent history.

Well, today, the Chicago City Council lifted the ban and are setting the ducks free. Well, letting us eat their livers, at least.

Didier Durand, chef/owner of Cyrano's Bistro on the near Northside, is leading the cheers. "Break out the champagne!" he cried.

Opponents to the delicacy, as well as to any animal-based food, were quick to cry out:
"To reverse a compassionate and admirable decision under pressure from political bullies and special interests shows a cowardly brand of cynicism unlike any we have seen in our efforts to give voice to the most vulnerable beings in our society - animals raised for food," said Julie Janovsky, director of campaigns for animal rights group Farm Sanctuary.
Pot calling the kettle burnt, you ask? PETA and Farm Sanctuary are political bullies and special interests, aren't they? I don't know of any other groups who physically attack their own species to make a point.

The nature of homo sapiens has been as hunter/gatherers for millenia. Much has been written of our current modern diet of grains and cereals and the problems they cause digestively. We are meat eaters.

I, for one, love foie gras and always have. I have had it many different ways, but the best is lightly seasoned and sautéed in butter, served with a good Sauterne.

I might be convinced that the method of force feeding the birds to produce larger, more veiny livers is harsh and, if someone could show me that a natural method of feeding produces the same flavors, I would go along with it.

but... i will stay my gross self, as some would label me, and continue to eat, not very often I might add, one of my favorite delicacies...

the Pope and me...

While I thought that I had nothing more in common with Benedict XVI than being male and having grown up in the Catholic church, I discovered via Michael Sneed's column in today's Chicago Sun-Times that we have, ummm, a similar taste. And it's not bad, trust me.

Pew news . . .

Gulp! Word is Pope Benedict XVI's favorite libation is not wine: it's orange Fanta soda pop.

Yeah, I know it's really not a big deal, but Orange Fanta in Europe is totally different than in the U.S. It's made with real orange juice and not all the artificial crap with which they make it here. It has a totally different taste that is incredible.

Fanta Orange - US.jpg

The first photo is a can from a French website. The second is from a US website. In the second one, you can clearly see the words Artificially flavored Orange Soda. Not in the first one.

When I'm in France it's about the only thing I drink, non-alcoholic, besides Vittel water.

vittel_ensemble.jpg

It's near impossible to buy Vittel in the Chicagoland area. I've even gone to the trouble of contacting Vittel directly to find out where I can buy it. They told me what companies hold the franchise to sell it, but none of them carry it in their stores and no one else can sell it.

jeebus cribes, i love the stuff...

I spent nearly all of my adult life in education. Sometimes I wonder what effect I had on the kids. I just hope that this person wasn't one of my students...

Keep in mind this actually really did happen!!!!

This is someone who was moving from an insurance claims office.

Okay, so this is how I imagine this conversation went:

Walmart Employee: “Hello ‘dis Walmarts, how can I help you?”

Customer: “ I would like to order a cake for a going away party this week.”

Walmart Employee: “What you want on the cake?”

Customer: “Best Wishes Suzanne” and underneath that “We will miss you”.

Please, scroll down to see the cake...

NCLB is supposed to work, but you have to put your money where your law is. The Tsar has never done that and he's lauded the law's successes. Instead, he's giving our money to things like Blackwater, Iraq contractors who have not done their job, and to support a war that has not really seen any true long term success.

So, I guess we'll just have to look forward to surprise parties with surprises like the one above...

an entire new meaning for "Whole Foods"...

I am a big fan of Whole Foods. I especially like two things: the cheese section and the fresh fruits and vegetables. Oh, and the fresh deli section with ready to eat foods. Oh, and the pastry and breads section. Oh, and the fresh seafood. Oh..., well you get the idea.

Well, they are bringing an entire new meaning to fresh, whole foods.

Whole Foods goes gay in Chicago
Chicago's new LGBT community center will soon have a Whole Foods Market as an anchor tenant, a partnership the Chicago Tribune calls unique in the United States.

Whole Foods' partnership with the Center on Halsted makes it the first major retailer to join a U.S. gay community center, the Tribune reported.
Advocate.com

This is right smack-dab in boystown in Chicago. It could very well become the most profitable Whole Foods Market store in the country. The LGBT community is probably more health conscious than any other section of the nation. Gay men do just about anything to look their best and Lesbians do everything that is natural, organic and ecologically safe. In addition, any Whole Foods Market I've ever shopped is, well, not just filled with beautiful people but very cruisey!

So, this could give new meaning to organic food. There could be major sales on frisée*. [*If you are familiar with French slang, you'll understand. Otherwise, check the note at the end of this post.] The fruit section could be much larger than at any other grocer. In the winter they may have real faggots*. [Yes, my tongue is totally in my cheek and in jeopardy of pushing through it.]

Seriously, this is one of the greatest things to happen. A major retailer is renting space from an LGBT center, offering many and varied options and services. They are recognizing the LGBT community as an important part of the country as a whole.

The Center on Halsted is one of the most important happenings for the Chicago LGBT Community. It is combining many, many services that previously were scattered all over the city and put them into one space:
The $20 million center will be home to more than 40 Chicago-area organizations. Its other amenities are almost too numerous to list: a 175-seat theatre, a gym, classrooms, a computer center, a rooftop garden and more. The list of available services will include programs for domestic violence survivors, youth counseling and education services, individual therapy, HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted disease programs. All will be housed under one roof. Advocate.com
It is really a great endeavor and the center was mostly funded by the LGBT community. It is the first center of its kind in the Midwest, joining New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

If you live in Chicago, or are visiting, make sure to stop in and visit.

[*note: frisé(e) is a member of the chicory family and is used as a salad green. In French slang it is one of the words used for lesbian. The word faggot originally was a bundle of sticks tied together for kindling - the starting of fires. The history puts it historically coming from the burning of heretics, witches, gays, etc. at the stake during the Inquisition and later purgings.]

going bananas...

A friend sent me this in an email. It's really very interesting. There is a wealth of benefits from bananas. They are also one of the best sources of water for hydration of the body.

Banana

Sadly, the bananas that we now eat are under worldwide attack from a virus and it's not the first time. The Gros Michel was the most popular banana at one time and was completely wiped off the face of the earth. We now eat the Cavendish and it is in the same boat [pun intended] and in jeopardy from the same disease that destroyed the Gros Michel.

A professor at CCNY for a psych class told his class about bananas. He said the expression "going bananas" is from the effects of bananas on the brain.

This is interesting. After reading this, you may never look at a banana in the same way again.

Read on:

Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depressed Banana

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school (England) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Frozen Banana

Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronic cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking & Tobacco Use: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"

PASS IT ON TO YOUR FRIENDS

PS: Bananas must be the reason monkeys are so happy all the time!

Monkey Eating Banana

I will add one here; want a quick shine on our shoes?? Take the INSIDE of the banana skin, and rub directly on the shoe...polish with dry cloth. Amazing fruit !!!
Never, put your banana in the refrigerator! [When cold, bananas decay from the inside out and they don't ripen they turn black.] You should use a silly little thing like a banana hammock

Hammock
or tree.

How do you tell if a banana is ripe? It's the brown spots on the skin - the more the riper. Also, as they ripen the skin becomes thinner and thinner.

and when all else fails...

sundae-thumb

this, all by itself, is enough to get anyone out of depression. and it has chocolate that has many of its own medicinal properties.

no wonder bananas and chocolate go so well together...

Now that's some pasta. I think I like the first one with chevre better. The mint in the second recipe doesn't do anything for me.
